Wildcats feel Mavericks' backlash
Glasgow Wildcats matched Hertfordshire Mavericks goal-for-goal for one quarter of their Co-operative Netball Superleague home tie. Unfortunately it was the final period of the match and the visitors had already secured their two point victory by winning each of the previous three quarters by at least eight goals.
After the match the home side admitted it was a slow start and that while they proved their defensive strength, they couldn’t quite convert that into quality possession and give their shooters more attempts to net the ball. Mavericks are good at tipping the advantage their way and with Karen Atkinson spearheading the mid-court assault it is tough for any team to make progress into the circle.
Wildcats were dogged in their efforts to get back in the game after falling quickly behind and while they could do little to halt the Hertfordshire side they did ensure the visitors did not run away with the match. “ Glasgow Wildcats are hard markers especially man-on-man and they never stopped all game,” said Mavericks head coach Maggie Jackson. “They deserve credit for their final quarter performance.”
Glasgow’s persistence and endeavour paid off in the final fifteen minutes of the match as they stepped up to the challenge and mirrored their opponents’ results. A running start may help them next time out and it was that flash of possibilities that head coach Denise Holland wanted her players to recognise. “Wildcats dug in deep to find solutions against a determined Mavericks side following their defeat against TeamBath, resulting in a well deserved 10-10 scoreline in the final quarter.”
After starting the week with a defeat to the defending champions, (unbeaten in the Superleague for nearly 16 months now) Hertfordshire Mavericks were glad to bank the points, although as ever head coach Maggie Jackson is allowing plenty of room for improvement from her team. “We put immense pressure on the opposition although we still need to be more consistent on our attacking throughout the court.”
“It was a good win, as ever good team spirit and Hertfordshire Mavericks continue to move onwards and upwards.”
