Storm declaw Wildcats
It is a double treat for Co-operative Netball Superleague fans this week with two televised games one recorded on Monday 8th February, 2010 and the second live from Guildford on Thursday 10th. Surrey Storm feature in both.
The squad started the week with a 44-point win over Glasgow Wildcats in Glasgow stretching out in front of the cameras to extend their already impressive “vital statistics” this season. The final result, 67-23, gives Storm a whopping goal difference of 199 - one more than the number of goals they have conceded in their first Superleague season, impressive by any standards.
Mkoloma and Mentor were up to their usual tricks, that is to say generally hogging the ball away from the opposition. Wildcats shooters Lesley MacDonald and Nicola Collins were allowed seven shots in the first quarter, just five in the second and so trailed 31- 7 at half time.
More ball found its way into the home side’s shooting circle in the third quarter after a number of substitutions for the final 30 minutes. Storm brought on Hannah Reid at goal keeper and Gemma Wiseman at goal-attack. Glasgow captain Lesley “Mac” moved out to GA and more ball found its way into the shooting circle where GS Rachel Holmes then landed 11 from her 13 attempts.
Storm’s defence steal the limelight but at the other end of the court Rachel Dunn was netting plenty of shots - 53 to be precise, the records will have to be checked to see how many if any other players have scored that many goals in a single game.
The Wildcats learned from their mistakes and improved as the game went on. Glasgow Wildcats head coach Denise Holland was more than happy with her players attitude in a tough match.
She said “Wildcats worked hard throughout the game intelligently and tireless to capitalise on possession. We will take many positives from this performance.”
A great atmosphere as ever in Glasgow with a packed out crowd of 650 right behind their team, this game will be on Sky Sports Xtra on Wednesday 10th February at 8pm.
